Projektentwicklung für eine Resortanlage in einem gebirgigem Wüstengebiet in den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten.
Wesentlich war dabei, die Grundsätzen von Nachhaltigkeit und Autarkie zu beachten, was sich in der Verwendung lokaler Baustoffe wie Lehm, Stein und Holz, alter Lüftuimgstechnologien („Windtürme“) und der Sammlung von Regenwasser sowie der Energie- und Nahrungsmittelproduktion vor Ort wiederspiegelt.
Das Hotel soll ein „Landmark“ für die Region sein, die Gäste haben – abgestimmt auf ihr Naturell und die Altersgruppe – die Wahl in einem Hotel, luxuriösen Villas, abenteuerlichen Biwaks oder einem Gästehaus zu wohnen. Vielfältige Freizeitaktivitäten werden am Gelände des Resorts angeboten.
Das zum Teil bereits künstlich veränderte Bestandsgelände wird renaturiert und soll durch landschaftlich spektakulär inszenierte Naturräume wie einer Felsschlucht oder Oasen bereichert werden. Eine fußläufige Erschließungsachse in Form eines für alle Gäste nutzbaren „bordwalks“ führt durch den vielfältigen Naturraum und verbindet die einzelnen Unterkunftsmöglichkeiten miteinander.

design concept – landscape
to preserve the natural habitat and scenery the original landscape will be partly recreated and modified.
this newly created wadi collects the rainwater from the near mountains, thus an oasis at the bottom of the canyon blooms, and thereby becomes the main attraction for the resort.
to preserve the genuine vegetation and the characteristic of the region a close collaboration with a landscape planner is vital part of the concept.
design concept – sustainability
straight from the beginning, sustainability has been a major part of the design development. here are some examples:
all guests will leave their cars at the valet parking before entering the resort.
internal transportation will only take place by either electric transportation (electric buggies / bicycles) or on foot.
electric bicycles will be provided for each guest, and electric charging stations are located next to every accommodation.
to collect and preserve the rare and important rainwater, conditioning facilities and artificially sealed ponds will be created inside the wadi, causing year – round water reservoirs and ensuring parts of the water supply of the resort.
by installing approximately 2000m2 of photovoltaic panels at the south or west facing roofs solar – power will be used to produce warm water and electricity
recycling and energy production will take place by means of waste processing at a remote location
design concept – area
the different locations within the resort (hotel, villa, canyon bivouac, guesthouse and farm) are spread along, above or inside the new wadi. Individual connections to and perspectives on the landscape are offered through their location and architecture. all elements are linked together via a long boardwalk which can be walked or driven on.
boardwalk
the boardwalk meanders along the wadi, connecting the entire resort, floating above ground to minimise the disturbance of the natural landscape. at each turn a different attraction is located, allowing individual interaction with the environment.

along the whole boardwalk different attractions are spread interacting with the surroundings and offering experiences with the various possibilities the landscape offers.
design concept – hotel
five clay jars towering high into the sky forming a well visible landmark for the entire region, leaning against a woven basked, held together by a ring, emerging out of the natural stony landscape.
each clay jar hosts a single luxurious suite on each level, allowing a unique view and a maximum of privacy. well considered openings embellish the facade, keeping the heat out, orchestrate the view and bringing enough light into the suites.
on the ground floor in and around the clay jars, the reception, a bar, a library and a generous foyer are situated.
on the second floor the main restaurants and bars are located. emerging over two levels with exceptional interior spaces and atmospheres.
on the top level the sky bar and restaurant with a 360° view of the entire area is located. offering everything from an interior shisha-bar and restaurant to exterior bbq areas and terraces.
the woven basket – wind tower, designed to bring cool air naturally to all levels, contains the internal horizontal and vertical distribution, with a double helix staircase and the elevators in the middle.
floating above the entry-level, shaded by the outer ring, the swimming area materializes out of the rock, creating a hybrid between a natural pond and a luxurious swimming pool, with the clay jars standing in the middle. the possibility to swim around and inside the clay jars offers a unique and never before seen swimming experience. inside each jar a different themed wellness oasis is located. from ice caves to steam baths and hot tubs, this wellness temple offers everything the heart could wish for and brings wellness to a new level
the outer ring emerges out of the natural rock, embedded into the stone on one side and floating high above the ground on the other side. hosting 43 suites on two levels, each with a different and unique view, from intimate cave-like atmospheres on the one side to light weighted and airy views on the other.
